Our people

Astrid van Nimwegen

director

Astrid van Nimwegen (1985, NL) works on the intersection of art and cinema. Her film and video-art projects explore in a slow, observant way the animal-human relationship and how we share spaces with domesticated companions. Through duration, repetition and stillness she creates an attentive mode of looking, to connect with renewed attention on an instinctive and intuitive level beyond logocentric understanding.

There is a thin line between caring for animals, nature and each other and the violence with which the care ends through human dominion and the usurped right to kill. Her works stems from a deep personal lonesomeness with which she observes the world around her, and a desire to build a space for universal emotions that can be felt by all of us if we dare to be vulnerable.

Her work has been exhibited internationally at film festivals and art venues such as International Film Festival Rotterdam, Netherlands Film Fstival, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Short Film Festival Oberhausen and New Media Festival Seoul.

Her latest documentary a Few Mornings, an Evening premiered in the Bright Future section of IFFR in 2024 and subsequently was released in Dutch arthouse cinemas by Mokum Film.

Her new film, Breathing Bodies, is currently in development with support of Netherlands Film Fund.
