Tragédia
A short film by Bernardo Zanotta
Production: Palermo/Wolfburg, near/by film, Venin Films, Ausgang
When teenage Bernardo is gifted a video camera by his father, he embarks on a journey where the lines between reality and fiction blur. Upon discovering his father's betrayal of his stepmother, Bernardo and her, inspired by Greek tragedies, hatch a plan for revenge, documenting every step.
Director's statement:
"On a visit to Brazil in 2021, I stumbled upon a trove of home videos from my youth. These videos, shot when I was about 13 years old, mark the inception of my love affair with cinema. What had been
erased from my memory, however, was the fact that in these videos, also stood a kind of catharsis, a premonition of the tragedy that would unfold in my family.
Without realising, the fiction which I'd created foreshadowed what was going on in real life, and shortly after filming those images, my father and stepmother separated due to his infidelity. Many
years later, I was able to re-signify that experience, both for me, but also for my stepmother, by mirroring our filmic attempt in classical antiquity.
The decision to work with this footage shot in 2009, was spurred by the recent cancer diagnosis of my father, which, sadly, culminated in his passing in November 2024. In many ways, this film became an initial step toward processing that imminent loss. Perhaps by killing him in our fiction, I could find a way to keep him alive."
